I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is the Faecal Calprotectin Test?

Calprotectin is a specialized protein found abundantly in neutrophils, a type of white blood cell. When there is active inflammation in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, these immune cells migrate to the gut lining and release calprotectin into the stool. By measuring the concentration of this protein in a stool sample, doctors can accurately gauge the exact level of inflammation inside your intestines, helping to guide diagnosis without immediately resorting to invasive procedures like colonoscopies.

IBD vs IBS Differentiation

Evaluating calprotectin is essential for:

  • Distinguishing Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
  • Confirming Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Preventing unnecessary colonoscopies
  • Providing rapid diagnostic clarity

Intestinal Inflammation

This test is highly useful because it:

  • Detects active gut inflammation
  • Investigates unexplained chronic diarrhoea
  • Assesses causes of severe abdominal cramps
  • Evaluates gastrointestinal bleeding risks

Treatment Monitoring

The laboratory provides critical data to:

  • Monitor Crohn’s disease flare-ups
  • Track Ulcerative Colitis remission
  • Evaluate the success of GI medications
  • Support specialist gastroenterologists

Clinical Uses

Why is Testing for Calprotectin Important?

The symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (which requires aggressive medical management) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (which is managed through diet and lifestyle) are frequently identical. Because calprotectin is highly stable in stool and directly correlates with mucosal inflammation, this simple test allows doctors to reliably separate the two conditions quickly and safely.

Evaluating Physical Symptoms

Specialists often request a faecal calprotectin test when patients present with distressing gastrointestinal symptoms, such as:

  • Persistent, unexplained diarrhoea lasting more than a few weeks.
  • Severe abdominal cramping, bloating, and unpredictable bowel habits.
  • Unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or visible blood/mucus in the stool.

Ongoing Medical & Diagnostic Use

Doctors frequently recommend routine Calprotectin monitoring for:

  • Patients diagnosed with Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative Colitis to predict impending flare-ups before severe symptoms begin.
  • Monitoring the healing of the intestinal mucosa to confirm that prescribed anti-inflammatory medications are actively working.
  • Ruling out inflammation in younger patients to confidently diagnose functional IBS without subjecting them to invasive endoscopy.

Understanding Gut Health

A quantitative Calprotectin test provides essential diagnostic clarity on your intestinal health. For further clinical guidance on differentiating bowel conditions in the UK, you can view the official NHS guide on Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Pathology Reports

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your report will display your faecal calprotectin concentration, typically measured in micrograms per gram (µg/g). A normal, low result strongly indicates that your symptoms are likely functional (such as IBS) rather than inflammatory. A significantly elevated result confirms the presence of active intestinal inflammation, which heavily suggests an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (like Crohn’s or Colitis) or a severe gastrointestinal infection. Your doctor will use this precise marker to determine if an urgent colonoscopy or medication adjustment is necessary.

Results Timeline: Your specialist gastroenterology report is available within just 1 day of sample submission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a blood test or a stool test?
The Calprotectin test is a non-invasive stool (faecal) test. Calprotectin is a protein released by white blood cells directly into the gastrointestinal tract during episodes of inflammation, making a stool sample the most accurate way to measure it.
How does this test distinguish between IBD and IBS?
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), such as Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis, causes physical inflammation in the gut, which significantly raises calprotectin levels. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder that causes similar symptoms but does not cause inflammation, so calprotectin levels remain normal.
How quickly will I get my results?
We understand that gastrointestinal symptoms can be highly distressing. Our specialist laboratory processes faecal calprotectin samples extremely quickly, delivering your comprehensive diagnostic results in just 1 day.
Do I need to change my diet before the test?
No special fasting or dietary changes are required before collecting your stool sample. However, you should inform your doctor if you regularly take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, as these can occasionally cause mild gut inflammation and elevate results.
Are there any hidden clinic fees?
No. Because this is a stool sample test, there is no phlebotomy (blood draw) fee required. You simply pay the £83.00 testing fee.

Most Searched Online Questions About Calprotectin

What is considered a “high” calprotectin level?
Generally, a level below 50 µg/g is considered normal. Levels between 50 and 150 µg/g are considered “borderline” and may warrant a retest in a few weeks. Levels consistently above 150-200 µg/g strongly indicate active organic inflammation, usually prompting a referral for a colonoscopy.
Can a gut infection cause high calprotectin?
Yes. Severe bacterial gastrointestinal infections (such as Salmonella or Campylobacter) cause intense temporary inflammation in the gut, which will cause a spike in calprotectin levels. However, these levels will typically return to normal once the infection clears, unlike in chronic IBD.
Can this test replace a colonoscopy?
While it cannot entirely replace a colonoscopy for diagnosing diseases or taking biopsies, a normal calprotectin result is incredibly useful for safely ruling out IBD in patients with IBS symptoms, thereby sparing them from an unnecessary and invasive colonoscopy.
