I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is a Homocysteine Blood Test?

Homocysteine is an amino acid naturally found in your blood. Your body normally breaks it down quickly using vitamins B12, B6, and folate to create other chemicals your body needs. High levels of homocysteine in the blood can indicate a deficiency in these essential vitamins or signal an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and blood clotting disorders.

Cardiovascular Risk

Evaluating homocysteine is essential for:

  • Assessing overall heart disease risk
  • Monitoring potential artery damage
  • Detecting increased risks of stroke
  • Guiding preventive heart health steps

Thrombophilia & Clotting

Testing helps clarify risks related to:

  • Investigating unexplained blood clots
  • Understanding risks of deep vein thrombosis
  • Screening for potential genetic mutations
  • Managing known clotting disorders

Nutritional Deficiencies

The test provides critical data to:

  • Detect Vitamin B12 shortages
  • Identify Folate (Vitamin B9) deficiencies
  • Investigate unexplained extreme fatigue
  • Evaluate suspected malabsorption issues

Clinical Uses

Why is Homocysteine Testing Important?

Elevated homocysteine levels can irritate blood vessels, contributing to plaque buildup and an increased likelihood of clots. Furthermore, because its metabolism relies on B vitamins, it is a highly sensitive marker for early nutritional deficiencies.

Evaluating Physical Symptoms & Risks

You should consider this test if you want to investigate cardiovascular or nutritional concerns. It is highly recommended if you:

  • Have a personal or family history of heart disease, stroke, or blood clots.
  • Are experiencing symptoms of B12 or folate deficiency, such as unexplained fatigue, dizziness, or tingling in the hands and feet.
  • Need to investigate the underlying causes of thrombophilia (abnormal blood clotting).

Medical & Ongoing Monitoring

Doctors frequently recommend Homocysteine screening to manage ongoing conditions, including:

  • Monitoring patients who have been diagnosed with renal failure, as this can elevate homocysteine levels.
  • Tracking the effectiveness of vitamin supplementation therapies over time.
  • Screening for specific genetic mutations that affect how the body processes amino acids.

Understanding Your Cardiovascular Health

Measuring your homocysteine levels provides essential clarity on your cardiovascular risks and nutritional status. For further information on heart health and managing cardiovascular disease risks in the UK, you can view the official NHS guide on cardiovascular disease.

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your results will detail your serum homocysteine levels alongside standard reference ranges. Elevated levels are often a sign that you may need more Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6, or folate in your diet, or it could highlight a potential cardiovascular risk factor. The report should always be interpreted alongside your specific medical history and other lipid profile results.

Results Timeline: Your Homocysteine report is carefully processed by our UKAS accredited laboratory and is typically available within 5 days of your blood draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to fast before the test?
Your doctor may recommend fasting for 10 to 12 hours before a homocysteine test to get the most accurate baseline reading, so please follow their specific advice.
How quickly will I get my results?
Your sample is processed precisely according to strict protocols, and your results will be securely delivered within 5 days.
Why does the sample need to be spun within 1 hour?
Red blood cells can continue to release homocysteine after the blood is drawn. Spinning and separating the sample quickly ensures the lab measures the exact level that was originally in your bloodstream.
Is the phlebotomy fee included in the £72.00 price?
No, the £24 phlebotomy service fee is separate and covers the professional process of drawing and preparing your blood at our clinic, ensuring clear pricing and no hidden costs.
What should I do if my homocysteine is high?
If your result is elevated, we highly recommend booking a GP consultation. Your doctor can help determine if the cause is a vitamin deficiency, a kidney issue, or a cardiovascular concern, and advise you on the next steps.
Online Trends

Most Searched Online Questions About Homocysteine

Can taking vitamins lower my homocysteine levels?
Yes. In many cases, if a high level is caused by a nutritional deficiency, taking Vitamin B12, B6, and folic acid supplements can effectively lower homocysteine levels back to normal.
What is the link between homocysteine and heart attacks?
High levels of homocysteine can damage the inner lining of your arteries and encourage blood clot formation, which significantly increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
What lifestyle factors increase homocysteine?
Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, a poor diet lacking in B vitamins, and high stress levels can all contribute to elevated homocysteine.
