Frequently Asked Questions

We are here to help

We understand that medical scans can feel daunting. Here are some answers to questions our patients often ask about their visit to Medical Diagnosis Victoria - MDX Victoria.

What happens during the ultrasound scan?

We use two common methods to ensure the best results:

1. Transabdominal: We glide a probe over your lower abdomen. For this, we ask you to have a comfortably full bladder so we can see clearly.

2. Transvaginal: A slender probe is used for a closer look at the uterus and ovaries. This is usually very comfortable and provides the highest detail. We will always discuss the best approach for you and ask for your consent before starting.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

It depends on the type of scan:

• For a transabdominal scan, please drink about 1.5 to 2 pints of water an hour before your appointment and keep your bladder full.

• For a transvaginal scan, we ask that you empty your bladder before the scan begins. We will guide you on what is needed when you arrive.

Will I get my results on the same day?

Yes. At Medical Diagnosis Victoria - MDX Victoria, we believe in providing quick answers. You will receive a clinically certified report before you leave our clinic, allowing you to discuss the findings with your GP or specialist right away.

Can I have the scan if I am on my period?

Absolutely. You can have a scan at any time during your cycle, even while on your period. It does not affect the quality of the scan. If you use a menstrual cup or tampon, you will just need to remove it before we begin an internal scan.

Does the internal scan hurt?

Most patients find the transvaginal scan to be comfortable. The probe is quite slender, and our sonographers are very gentle. You may feel a slight pressure, but it should not be painful. You are in control of your care and can ask us to stop at any time.
