I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is a 4th Generation HIV Test?

A 4th generation HIV test is the recommended method for diagnosing HIV because it looks for two different markers in the blood. First, it detects the p24 antigen, a viral protein that spikes rapidly in the initial weeks after infection. Second, it identifies the HIV antibodies that your immune system produces in response to the virus over time. This dual approach significantly narrows the “window period,” allowing for much earlier and more reliable detection than older antibody-only tests.

Early Detection (p24 Antigen)

Evaluating the viral antigen allows doctors to:

  • Identify very recent exposures
  • Detect the virus before antibodies form
  • Shorten the testing window period
  • Provide rapid clinical answers

Chronic Infection (Antibodies)

This test is highly useful because it:

  • Detects long-standing HIV infections
  • Identifies established immune responses
  • Provides baseline screening data
  • Offers peace of mind for past exposures

Complete Confidentiality

Our clinical pathway ensures:

  • Strictly private and discreet testing
  • Non-judgemental medical care
  • Secure delivery of sensitive results
  • Access to supportive follow-up care

Clinical Uses

Why is HIV Screening Important?

Early diagnosis of HIV is life-changing. Modern antiretroviral treatments (ART) are highly effective, allowing individuals living with HIV to enjoy long, healthy lives. Furthermore, effective treatment reduces the viral load to undetectable levels, meaning the virus cannot be passed on to sexual partners (Undetectable = Untransmittable, or U=U). Regular screening is the only way to know your status.

When Should You Get Tested?

You should consider booking this test if you:

  • Have had unprotected sex with a new or casual partner.
  • Are beginning a new sexual relationship and want a routine sexual health check.
  • Have experienced a high-risk event (such as a needle-stick injury or a condom breaking).
  • Are experiencing early symptoms of a viral infection (such as a persistent fever, sore throat, or swollen lymph nodes) following a potential exposure.

Understanding the “Window Period”

The window period is the time between potential exposure to HIV and when a test can accurately detect it. While the p24 antigen can often be detected within 2 to 4 weeks of exposure, a 4th generation laboratory blood test is generally considered conclusive at 45 days post-exposure. If you test before 45 days, a repeat test may be advised.

Understanding Sexual Health

A comprehensive 4th Generation HIV blood test provides essential clarity on your sexual health. For further information on HIV symptoms, testing guidelines, and modern treatments in the UK, you can view the official NHS guide on HIV and AIDS.

Pathology Reports

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your results will clearly state whether HIV markers were “Not Detected” (Non-Reactive) or “Detected” (Reactive). A Non-Reactive result means no HIV antibodies or p24 antigens were found. Provided the 45-day window period has passed since your last risk exposure, this is a conclusive negative result. Any Reactive result is always considered presumptive and will immediately be followed by highly specific confirmatory laboratory testing.

Results Timeline: Your confidential serology report is typically available within 3 days of your blood draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to fast before the test?
No, fasting is not required for an HIV blood test. You can eat and drink normally before attending the clinic.
What is the difference between a 3rd and 4th generation test?
A 3rd generation test only looks for HIV antibodies, which can take up to 3 months to develop. A 4th generation test looks for both antibodies and the p24 viral antigen, shortening the conclusive window period to just 45 days.
Will my results remain confidential?
Yes, absolutely. We operate under strict medical confidentiality protocols. Your results and personal data are never shared without your explicit consent.
Is the phlebotomy fee included in the £46.00 price?
No, the £24.00 phlebotomy service fee is separate and covers the professional process of drawing your blood at our clinic, ensuring clear pricing and no hidden costs.
What should I do if my test is Reactive?
A reactive test is not a final diagnosis. It requires a secondary, confirmatory test. Our clinical team will support you through this process and, if confirmed, help you immediately access specialist care and highly effective treatments.

Most Searched Online Questions About HIV Testing

What is the p24 antigen?
The p24 antigen is a structural protein that makes up most of the HIV viral core. It is produced in high amounts early in the infection, making it an excellent marker for early diagnosis before the body has had time to produce antibodies.
Can HIV be cured?
Currently, there is no cure for HIV, but there are highly effective medical treatments. With early diagnosis and daily antiretroviral therapy (ART), individuals with HIV can live a normal lifespan and achieve an undetectable viral load, meaning they cannot pass the virus to others (U=U).
Who should get tested for HIV?
Everyone who is sexually active should consider routine screening. It is especially recommended if you have had unprotected sex, have shared injecting equipment, or are starting a new sexual relationship.
