I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is the Brucella IgG Test?

Brucellosis is a bacterial infection transmitted from animals to humans, most commonly through the consumption of unpasteurised milk or cheese, or through direct occupational contact with infected livestock. The Brucella IgG blood test looks for specific long term antibodies produced by your immune system. Because IgG antibodies persist in the blood for months or years, this test is an excellent clinical tool for identifying chronic, persistent infections or verifying historical exposure to the bacteria.

Chronic Infection

Evaluating IgG antibodies helps to:

  • Confirm persistent brucellosis
  • Investigate fevers of unknown origin
  • Assess long standing joint pain
  • Identify systemic inflammation

Exposure History

This test is highly useful because it:

  • Verifies past bacterial exposure
  • Assesses agricultural workers
  • Evaluates returning travellers
  • Investigates raw dairy consumption

Diagnostic Clarity

The laboratory provides critical data to:

  • Differentiate active from past illness (with IgM)
  • Guide prolonged antibiotic therapy
  • Rule out other chronic conditions
  • Support infectious disease specialists

Clinical Uses

Why is Blood Testing for Brucellosis Important?

Brucellosis is often called “undulant fever” because body temperatures can rise and fall in waves over a long period. The symptoms easily mimic other chronic conditions like malaria, tuberculosis, or chronic fatigue syndrome. Detecting specific Brucella IgG antibodies provides the clinical certainty needed to secure an accurate diagnosis and begin the correct targeted treatment.

Evaluating Physical Symptoms

You should consider this test if you are experiencing lingering, unexplained symptoms, particularly after travelling or consuming unpasteurised foods, such as:

  • Long term, recurring fevers accompanied by severe, drenching night sweats.
  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain, especially in the lower back or large joints.
  • Profound fatigue, lethargy, and unexplained weight loss.

Ongoing Medical & Diagnostic Use

Doctors frequently recommend antibody testing to manage complex diagnoses, including:

  • Differentiating between a past, resolved infection and a currently active chronic infection (often by testing both IgG and IgM antibodies together).
  • Investigating chronic health issues in agricultural workers, veterinarians, or abattoir staff.
  • Providing a definitive diagnosis for patients referred to specialists for fevers of unknown origin.

Understanding Zoonotic Infections

A comprehensive Brucella Serology blood test provides essential clarity on deep seated bacterial infections. For further information on how animal to human infections spread and how to prevent them in the UK, you can view the official NHS guide on brucellosis.

Pathology Reports

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your results will indicate whether IgG antibodies to Brucella species are present in your blood. A positive (or reactive) result strongly suggests a past exposure to the bacteria or a chronic, ongoing infection. Because IgG antibodies can remain elevated long after an infection has cleared, your doctor will closely interpret these results alongside your current physical symptoms and, if necessary, an IgM test to rule out an acute flare up.

Results Timeline: Your specialist serology report is typically available within 7 days of your blood draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to fast before the test?
No special preparation or fasting is required before this blood test. You can eat and drink normally prior to your appointment.
What is the difference between IgM and IgG tests for Brucella?
IgM antibodies are produced immediately after an initial exposure, making them markers for an early, acute illness. IgG antibodies develop a few weeks later and can remain in your blood for years, which indicates past exposure or a chronic, persistent infection.
How quickly will I get my results?
Your sample is processed efficiently by our specialist laboratory, and your comprehensive results will be securely delivered within 7 days.
Is the phlebotomy fee included in the £61.00 price?
No, the £24.00 phlebotomy service fee is separate and covers the professional process of drawing your blood at our clinic, ensuring clear pricing and no hidden costs.
Can brucellosis be cured?
Yes. Brucellosis is treated successfully with a specific, targeted course of antibiotics. Because the bacteria can hide inside cells, treatment often requires taking multiple antibiotics for several weeks to prevent a relapse.

Most Searched Online Questions About Brucellosis

How do you catch brucellosis?
The most common way humans contract the infection is by eating or drinking unpasteurised dairy products (like raw milk or certain artisan cheeses). It can also be caught by breathing in the bacteria or through open skin wounds when handling infected animals.
Is brucellosis common in the UK?
Brucellosis is very rare in the UK because it has been eradicated in British livestock. Most cases seen in the UK are diagnosed in people who caught the infection while travelling abroad or who consumed imported unpasteurised dairy products.
Why does it cause severe night sweats?
The bacteria trigger a strong systemic inflammatory response. Because the fever tends to spike in the late afternoon and evening (undulant fever), the body responds by producing profuse, drenching sweat during the night to cool down.
