I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is a Urine Amylase Test?

The urine amylase test measures the level of the enzyme amylase in a urine sample. Amylase is produced primarily by the pancreas and salivary glands and is essential for the breakdown of dietary starches. Evaluating urinary amylase is widely used to support the assessment of pancreatic function and to investigate conditions that may affect the pancreas or your body’s digestive enzyme activity.

Pancreatic Health

Evaluating amylase in urine is essential for:

  • Diagnosing acute pancreatitis
  • Monitoring chronic pancreatic issues
  • Investigating severe abdominal pain
  • Detecting pancreatic duct blockages

Digestive Function

This test helps monitor digestion by:

  • Assessing starch breakdown capabilities
  • Checking overall enzyme activity
  • Evaluating gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Supporting metabolic assessments

Salivary Gland Evaluation

The laboratory provides critical data on:

  • Salivary gland inflammation
  • Conditions like mumps or infections
  • Differentiating causes of high amylase
  • Comprehensive enzyme clearance

Clinical Uses

Why is a Urine Amylase Test Important?

When the pancreas is inflamed or damaged, large amounts of amylase leak into the blood and are eventually filtered out by the kidneys into the urine. Interestingly, amylase levels can remain elevated in urine for several days after blood levels have returned to normal, making it a highly effective diagnostic tool.

Evaluating Physical Symptoms

You should consider this test if you are actively experiencing severe physical discomfort, such as:

  • Sudden, severe pain in your upper abdomen that may radiate to your back.
  • Unexplained nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite.
  • Fever alongside persistent digestive distress.

Ongoing Medical Monitoring

Doctors frequently recommend urine amylase testing to manage ongoing treatments and investigations, including:

  • Tracking the recovery phase of acute pancreatitis.
  • Investigating the underlying causes of chronic digestive issues.
  • Following up on previously abnormal blood amylase or lipase tests.

Important Collection Notice

Please call the laboratory for specimen collection instructions before booking an appointment. This specific test requires special sample tubes and containers to ensure the stability of the enzyme prior to analysis.

Understanding Pancreatic Health

Pathology Reports

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your results will detail the amount of amylase present in your urine. High levels typically suggest pancreatic inflammation, a blocked pancreatic duct, or an issue with your salivary glands. Because this enzyme clears from the blood into the urine, an elevated urine amylase result can persist longer than a blood test. The report should always be assessed in conjunction with your medical history and clinical examination.

Results Timeline: Your comprehensive enzyme report is typically available within just 4 hours of submitting your properly collected sample.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to give a blood sample for this test?
No, this specific test measures amylase clearance through a urine sample. It is entirely non invasive.
Why do I need to call the lab before booking?
Urine amylase testing requires specific sample tubes and containers to ensure the enzyme does not degrade before analysis. Calling ahead ensures you have the correct equipment and instructions.
How quickly will I get my results?
Your sample is processed efficiently by our laboratory, and your comprehensive results will be securely delivered within 4 hours.
Why is there no phlebotomy fee?
A phlebotomy fee only applies to blood draws. Because this is a urine collection, you only pay the £22.00 testing fee.
Why test urine instead of blood?
Amylase levels often remain elevated in urine for a longer period of time compared to blood. This makes the urine test highly useful if you seek medical attention a few days after your symptoms begin.

Most Searched Online Questions About Amylase

What causes high amylase in urine?
The most common cause is acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). Other causes include a blocked pancreatic duct, salivary gland infections like mumps, or certain gastrointestinal conditions.
Can drinking alcohol affect my amylase levels?
Yes. Heavy alcohol consumption is a leading cause of acute and chronic pancreatitis, which will directly cause your amylase levels to spike.
What happens if amylase is low?
A low amylase result is less common but can indicate significant damage to the pancreas where it can no longer produce enzymes, or a severe liver disease.
