I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is the Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) Test?

The ESR test is a simple but incredibly useful haematology test that acts as a generalized “radar” for systemic inflammation. It measures the distance (in millimetres) that your red blood cells settle in a test tube over one hour. When inflammation is present in the body, the liver produces high levels of “acute phase proteins” (like fibrinogen). These proteins cause red blood cells to stick together in clumps (rouleaux), making them heavier and causing them to sink to the bottom of the tube much faster than normal.

Autoimmune Diseases

Evaluating this biomarker helps to:

  • Support rheumatoid arthritis (RA) diagnosis
  • Investigate systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • Assess Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR)
  • Monitor autoimmune flare-ups

Vascular Inflammation

This test is highly useful because it:

  • Assists in diagnosing Temporal Arteritis
  • Investigates severe, unexplained headaches
  • Evaluates systemic vasculitis disorders
  • Protects against inflammation-induced vision loss

Chronic Infections

The laboratory provides critical data to:

  • Investigate unexplained prolonged fevers
  • Assess chronic bone infections (osteomyelitis)
  • Support diagnostics for systemic bacterial infections
  • Monitor recovery from severe illness

Clinical Uses

Why is Blood Testing for ESR Important?

Because the ESR test is “nonspecific,” an elevated result does not tell the doctor exactly where the inflammation is or what is causing it. However, it is an essential first-line diagnostic puzzle piece. It tells your clinical team that a significant inflammatory process is occurring, distinguishing organic disease from functional symptoms and guiding them toward the correct follow-up tests.

Evaluating Physical Symptoms

Clinicians frequently request an ESR test when investigating unexplained symptoms, including:

  • Severe joint pain, morning stiffness lasting more than an hour, or swelling in multiple joints.
  • Unexplained chronic fatigue, night sweats, or a persistent low-grade fever.
  • A new, severe headache localized to the temples, frequently accompanied by jaw pain when chewing or sudden vision changes (classic signs of Temporal Arteritis).

Ongoing Treatment Surveillance & Follow-Up

The ESR blood test is widely utilised across rheumatology and general practice for:

  • Monitoring Chronic Disease: Tracking the biological activity of Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupus over time.
  • Medication Efficacy: Confirming whether immunosuppressant therapies or high-dose corticosteroids are successfully reducing systemic inflammation.

Understanding Autoimmune & Inflammatory Conditions

A quantitative ESR assay provides essential baseline evidence for your diagnostic profile. For further clinical guidance on recognizing symptoms of common autoimmune and inflammatory conditions in the UK, consult the official NHS guide on Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Pathology Reports

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your report will display your Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate in millimetres per hour (mm/hr). Normal reference ranges vary based on your age and biological sex (women and older adults naturally have slightly higher baseline ESR levels). A mildly elevated ESR can indicate a minor infection, age-related changes, or even normal pregnancy. A highly elevated ESR (e.g., > 100 mm/hr) is a strong indicator of an active, severe condition, such as Temporal Arteritis, active systemic lupus, or a deep-seated infection, prompting immediate further medical review.

Results Timeline: Your UKAS accredited diagnostic report is typically available within just same day of your blood draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to fast before an ESR blood test?
No special fasting is strictly required before an ESR blood test. You may eat and drink normally prior to your appointment.
What does an ESR test actually measure?
ESR stands for Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate. The test measures how quickly your red blood cells (erythrocytes) settle at the bottom of a test tube over the course of one hour. When you have inflammation in your body, abnormal proteins cause the red blood cells to clump together and sink faster than normal.
How quickly will I receive my ESR test results?
Your sample is processed in our UKAS accredited laboratory with maximum efficiency. Your comprehensive diagnostic results will be securely delivered within just same day of your blood draw.
What is the difference between an ESR and a CRP test?
Both tests measure inflammation. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is an “acute phase” reactant, meaning it rises very quickly during a sudden infection or injury and drops rapidly once it resolves. ESR changes more slowly, making it a better marker for monitoring long-term, chronic inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
Is the phlebotomy fee included in the £19.00 price?
No, the £24.00 phlebotomy service fee is separate. It covers the expert clinical blood draw performed by our qualified practitioners at our central Victoria clinic.

Most Searched Online Questions About ESR

What are Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Temporal Arteritis?
These are related inflammatory disorders that predominantly affect older adults. PMR causes severe muscle stiffness in the shoulders and hips, while Temporal Arteritis causes inflammation of the blood vessels in the scalp, posing a risk to vision. The ESR test is a critical, primary diagnostic tool for both conditions, as levels are typically extremely high.
Does age affect ESR levels?
Yes. Your ESR naturally increases slightly as you get older. Laboratories use age-adjusted reference ranges to ensure accurate interpretations; what is considered a “high” ESR for a 20-year-old may be entirely normal for an 80-year-old.
Can a high ESR mean cancer?
While a significantly elevated ESR is most commonly caused by severe infections or autoimmune diseases, it can sometimes be associated with certain cancers, particularly multiple myeloma or lymphomas, which produce abnormal proteins in the blood. It is a puzzle piece that doctors use alongside other tests.
