I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is the Cancer Antigen 125 (CA 125) Test?

Cancer Antigen 125 (CA 125) is a high-molecular-weight glycoprotein found on the surface of many ovarian cancer cells and produced by epithelial tissues lining the peritoneum, pleura, and fallopian tubes. When ovarian tissue undergoes malignant transformation or when peritoneal surfaces become significantly inflamed, excess CA 125 sheds into circulation. While not an isolated standalone diagnostic test, measuring circulating CA 125 is an essential clinical component alongside pelvic imaging to identify ovarian pathology and track treatment response.

Ovarian Assessment

Evaluating this biomarker helps to:

  • Support the diagnosis of ovarian cancer
  • Evaluate suspicious pelvic or adnexal masses
  • Assess persistent abdominal swelling or pain
  • Guide clinical referral to gynaecological oncology

Therapy & Monitoring

This test is highly useful because it:

  • Tracks response to chemotherapy treatment
  • Assesses surgical clearance following tumour resection
  • Monitors long-term recurrence in known malignancy
  • Provides objective biochemical tracking

Benign Pelvic Evaluation

The laboratory provides critical data to:

  • Investigate severe endometriosis
  • Assess complex uterine fibroids
  • Evaluate pelvic inflammatory conditions
  • Support comprehensive women’s health panels

Clinical Uses

Why is Blood Testing for CA 125 Important?

Early symptoms of ovarian conditions are frequently subtle and easily mistaken for common digestive complaints like IBS. National clinical guidelines, including NICE guidelines in the UK, recommend testing serum CA 125 as a primary diagnostic triage in women experiencing frequent or persistent pelvic and abdominal symptoms.

Evaluating Persistent Physical Symptoms

Clinicians advise investigating serum CA 125 if you experience any of the following symptoms persistently—especially if occurring 12 or more times per month:

  • Persistent, non-fluctuating abdominal bloating or increased abdominal girth.
  • Ongoing pelvic pain or lower abdominal discomfort.
  • Early satiety, reduced appetite, or feeling full quickly after eating small meals.
  • Increased urinary urgency or frequency not attributed to a confirmed urinary tract infection (UTI).

Ongoing Clinical Surveillance & Follow-Up

The CA 125 blood test is an established surveillance marker in several specialized contexts:

  • Routine follow-up in patients undergoing therapy for epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer.
  • Serial monitoring post-treatment to detect early asymptomatic recurrence before lesions become visible on scans.
  • Part of multidisciplinary risk evaluation (such as calculating the Risk of Malignancy Index / RMI) alongside pelvic ultrasound.

Understanding Ovarian Health & Gynaecological Symptoms

A quantitative CA 125 test provides crucial diagnostic evidence for you and your physician. For additional clinical guidance on recognizing symptoms and diagnosis of ovarian conditions in the UK, consult the official NHS guide on ovarian cancer.

Pathology Reports

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your report will specify your serum CA 125 level in units per millilitre (U/mL). A value below 35 U/mL is generally considered within normal parameters, though a normal reading cannot completely rule out early ovarian disease. If your result is 35 U/mL or higher, it does not confirm a malignancy on its own; benign causes like fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, or pelvic infections frequently cause elevations. Your doctor will interpret this level in combination with your menopausal status, symptoms, and pelvic ultrasound imaging.

Results Timeline: Your specialist diagnostic report is typically available within 5 days of your blood draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to fast before a CA 125 blood test?
No special fasting is required before a CA 125 blood test. You may eat and drink normally prior to your appointment. However, active menstruation can sometimes cause a mild, temporary rise in CA 125 levels, so you may wish to discuss timing with your clinician.
Does an elevated CA 125 level mean I have ovarian cancer?
Not necessarily. While CA 125 is elevated in the majority of advanced ovarian cancers, several benign conditions can also raise levels, including endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ovarian cysts, liver disease, and even normal menstruation.
How quickly will I receive my CA 125 test results?
Because this biomarker requires precise quantitative immunoassay testing performed at our accredited referral laboratory, your comprehensive report will be securely delivered within 5 days.
Is the phlebotomy fee included in the £72.00 price?
No, the £24.00 phlebotomy service fee is separate and covers the professional blood draw carried out by our experienced healthcare team at our central Victoria clinic.
What is considered a normal CA 125 level?
In most clinical laboratories, a CA 125 reading below 35 U/mL (units per millilitre) is considered within the standard reference range. Readings at or above 35 U/mL generally warrant further clinical assessment, pelvic ultrasound, or specialist gynaecological review.
Online Trends

Most Searched Online Questions About CA 125

Can endometriosis or ovarian cysts cause high CA 125?
Yes. Endometriosis, adenomyosis, benign ovarian cystadenomas, and pelvic inflammation irritate the peritoneal lining, which can stimulate increased production of CA 125, often causing mild to moderate elevations in premenopausal women.
Is CA 125 effective as a routine screening test for all women?
Routine population screening with CA 125 in asymptomatic women is not recommended by the NHS or international guidelines. This is because CA 125 can be normal in early-stage ovarian cancers and elevated in many harmless conditions, leading to false reassurance or unnecessary invasive procedures. It is most effective when applied to symptomatic individuals or for monitoring diagnosed cases.
What is the Risk of Malignancy Index (RMI)?
The Risk of Malignancy Index (RMI) is a validated clinical formula used by gynaecologists to evaluate pelvic masses. It combines your absolute CA 125 level, your menopausal status, and specific ultrasound features of the mass to determine the likelihood of malignancy and plan appropriate surgical care.
