I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is the Cadmium Blood Test?

Cadmium is a highly toxic heavy metal found in industrial environments, certain agricultural soils, and tobacco smoke. While the body has no biological use for cadmium, it can accumulate over time—particularly in the kidneys and liver—leading to severe, irreversible damage. This targeted blood test measures your systemic cadmium concentration, providing critical data to prevent serious long-term renal, respiratory, and skeletal complications.

Occupational Exposure

Evaluating this metal is essential for:

  • Monitoring workers in metalworking and welding
  • Assessing battery production staff
  • Supporting workplace health protocols
  • Guiding safe industrial practices

Environmental & Lifestyle

This test is highly useful because it:

  • Evaluates heavy metal load in long-term smokers
  • Assesses suspected contaminated food/water
  • Identifies general environmental hazards
  • Provides a baseline for toxicology concerns

Toxicity Investigation

The laboratory provides critical data to:

  • Investigate unexplained kidney dysfunction
  • Evaluate severe bone pain or fragility
  • Assess long-term heavy metal contact
  • Support clinical toxicology specialists

Clinical Uses

Why is Blood Testing for Cadmium Important?

Detecting elevated cadmium early is vital. Chronic exposure often presents with silent, progressive damage to the kidneys before obvious physical symptoms appear. An accurate blood test confirms systemic toxicity, allowing doctors to intervene promptly and prevent irreversible tissue damage or severe metabolic disruption.

Evaluating Physical Symptoms

You should consider this test if you are at risk of exposure and are actively experiencing unexplained symptoms, such as:

  • Unexplained kidney issues, including protein in the urine (proteinuria).
  • Deep bone pain or an increased susceptibility to fractures (osteomalacia or osteoporosis).
  • Respiratory distress or chronic lung issues if the exposure involved inhaling metal fumes.

Ongoing Medical & Occupational Monitoring

Doctors frequently recommend regular testing to manage high-risk groups, including:

  • Industrial workers handling cadmium-containing alloys, soldering materials, or working in battery manufacturing.
  • Individuals with heavy, long-term smoking histories seeking a comprehensive health baseline.
  • Routine health and safety compliance testing for corporate occupational toxicology programmes.

Understanding Toxicology

A comprehensive Cadmium blood test provides essential clarity on heavy metal accumulation. For further information on managing chemical exposures and poisoning in the UK, you can view the official NHS guide on poisoning.

Pathology Reports

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your report will detail the exact serum concentration of cadmium in your blood, measured against safe reference ranges. For patients without significant exposure, levels should be exceedingly low. If your levels are elevated, it indicates a toxic overload. Blood tests are highly effective for detecting recent or ongoing exposure, while long-term accumulation is often additionally evaluated through kidney function tests. Your doctor will interpret these results alongside your occupational history.

Results Timeline: Your specialist toxicology report is typically available within 15 days of your blood draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to fast before the test?
No special fasting is strictly required before this blood test. You can eat and drink normally prior to your appointment.
How does cadmium enter the body?
The most common routes of significant exposure are inhalation of dust or fumes in industrial settings (like welding or battery manufacturing) and smoking tobacco, as the tobacco plant readily absorbs cadmium from the soil.
How quickly will I get my results?
Because accurate toxicology screening requires highly specialised equipment and meticulous processing, your comprehensive results will be securely delivered within 15 days.
Is the phlebotomy fee included in the £54.00 price?
No, the £24.00 phlebotomy service fee is separate and covers the professional process of drawing your blood at our clinic, ensuring clear pricing and no hidden costs.
How is cadmium toxicity treated?
The primary treatment involves identifying and immediately removing the source of the exposure. Unlike some other heavy metals, chelation therapy is often less effective for cadmium, making early detection and prevention of further kidney damage the critical focus.
Online Trends

Most Searched Online Questions About Cadmium Exposure

Are smokers at a higher risk of cadmium toxicity?
Yes. Tobacco leaves naturally accumulate high levels of cadmium from the soil. As a result, heavy smokers typically have twice the cadmium burden in their bodies compared to non-smokers.
Can long-term exposure cause permanent damage?
Yes. Chronic exposure to cadmium is highly dangerous and is most closely linked to progressive, irreversible kidney damage and a severe bone-thinning disorder known as “Itai-itai” disease.
What is metal fume fever?
Metal fume fever is an acute, flu-like illness that can occur in welders or industrial workers shortly after inhaling high concentrations of metal oxide fumes, including those containing cadmium.
