I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is the Arsenic Blood Test?

Arsenic is a naturally occurring, highly toxic element found in the environment, certain agricultural pesticides, and contaminated groundwater. While trace amounts are occasionally ingested through diet, high levels of exposure can lead to severe acute or chronic poisoning. This targeted blood test measures your systemic arsenic concentration, providing critical data to prevent serious long-term neurological, dermatological, and cardiovascular complications.

Occupational Exposure

Evaluating this metal is essential for:

  • Monitoring workers in at-risk industries
  • Assessing agricultural pesticide exposure
  • Supporting workplace health protocols
  • Guiding safe industrial practices

Toxicity Investigation

This test is highly useful because it:

  • Assesses suspected heavy metal poisoning
  • Evaluates contaminated water concerns
  • Identifies environmental hazards
  • Differentiates organic from inorganic toxicity

Symptom Evaluation

The laboratory provides critical data to:

  • Investigate severe gastrointestinal distress
  • Evaluate unexplained nerve tingling
  • Assess atypical skin lesions or changes
  • Support clinical toxicology specialists

Clinical Uses

Why is Blood Testing for Arsenic Important?

Detecting elevated arsenic early is vital. Chronic exposure often presents with vague, progressive symptoms that mimic other illnesses. An accurate blood test confirms systemic toxicity, allowing doctors to intervene promptly and prevent irreversible tissue damage or severe metabolic disruption.

Evaluating Physical Symptoms

You should consider this test if you are at risk of exposure and are actively experiencing unexplained symptoms, such as:

  • Sudden, severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
  • Neurological issues, including “pins and needles” (neuropathy) or numbness in the hands and feet.
  • Unusual dermatological changes, such as hyperpigmentation, thickening of the skin, or atypical lesions.

Ongoing Medical & Occupational Monitoring

Doctors frequently recommend regular testing to manage high-risk groups, including:

  • Agricultural workers handling certain types of pesticides or wood preservatives.
  • Individuals living near industrial smelting sites or relying on unregulated well water.
  • Baseline and routine health testing for corporate occupational safety programmes.

Understanding Toxicology

A comprehensive Arsenic blood test provides essential clarity on heavy metal accumulation. For further information on managing chemical exposures and poisoning in the UK, you can view the official NHS guide on poisoning.

Pathology Reports

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your report will detail the exact serum concentration of arsenic in your blood, measured against safe reference ranges. For patients without significant exposure, levels should be extremely low. If your levels are elevated, it indicates a toxic overload. Because arsenic rapidly clears from the blood into tissues (such as hair and nails), a blood test is highly effective for detecting recent, acute exposure. Your doctor will interpret these results alongside your clinical history and symptoms.

Results Timeline: Your specialist toxicology report is typically available within 15 days of your blood draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to fast before the test?
No special fasting is strictly required before this blood test. However, we recommend avoiding a high-seafood diet for a few days prior to the test, as certain fish contain harmless “organic” arsenic that can temporarily elevate your levels.
What is the difference between acute and chronic arsenic poisoning?
Acute poisoning happens after a large, sudden dose and causes immediate, severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Chronic poisoning occurs from long-term, low-dose exposure and typically presents with slow, progressive skin changes, nerve damage, and an increased risk of certain cancers.
How quickly will I get my results?
Because accurate toxicology screening requires highly specialised equipment and meticulous processing, your comprehensive results will be securely delivered within 15 days.
Is the phlebotomy fee included in the £50.00 price?
No, the £24.00 phlebotomy service fee is separate and covers the professional process of drawing your blood at our clinic, ensuring clear pricing and no hidden costs.
How is arsenic toxicity treated?
Treatment fundamentally involves identifying and immediately removing the source of the exposure. For patients with severe acute accumulation, doctors may prescribe specific chelation therapy to help the body safely bind and excrete the metal.

Most Searched Online Questions About Arsenic Exposure

Where does arsenic come from?
Arsenic is naturally present in the earth’s crust and can contaminate groundwater, especially in unregulated wells. It is also used industrially in preserving wood, manufacturing certain glass, and in some older agricultural pesticides.
Is there arsenic in food like rice?
Trace amounts of arsenic can be found in rice and some seafood because they absorb it from the soil and water. However, the levels in regulated commercial foods are generally too low to cause acute toxicity in a varied diet.
Can long-term exposure cause permanent damage?
Yes. Chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic is highly dangerous and is linked to permanent nerve damage (neuropathy), cardiovascular disease, and an increased risk of developing cancers of the skin, bladder, and lungs.
