I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is the Adeno / Rota Virus Antigen Test?

Rotavirus and Adenovirus are highly contagious viruses that frequently cause gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. While they are especially common in children and infants, they can affect adults as well. This diagnostic test analyses a small stool sample to detect the specific viral antigens (proteins) produced by these viruses, confirming exactly what is causing the acute gastrointestinal distress.

Rotavirus Detection

Evaluating stool for rotavirus is essential for:

  • Diagnosing acute watery diarrhoea
  • Managing severe infant gastroenteritis
  • Preventing dangerous dehydration
  • Controlling nursery outbreaks

Adenovirus Screening

This test is highly useful because it:

  • Identifies enteric (intestinal) adenovirus
  • Explains prolonged digestive symptoms
  • Investigates concurrent fever
  • Distinguishes viral from bacterial causes

Gastrointestinal Health

The laboratory provides critical data to:

  • Avoid unnecessary antibiotic use
  • Guide appropriate fluid therapies
  • Monitor recovery from stomach bugs
  • Support paediatric and adult care

Clinical Uses

Why is Viral Antigen Testing Important?

Because the symptoms of viral gastroenteritis are virtually identical to those of bacterial food poisoning, determining the exact cause is crucial. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics. A rapid, accurate diagnosis ensures that patients, particularly vulnerable infants and the elderly, receive the correct supportive care focused on hydration rather than ineffective medications.

Evaluating Physical Symptoms

You should consider this test if you or your child are actively experiencing signs of gastroenteritis, such as:

  • Frequent, severe, and watery diarrhoea.
  • Sudden bouts of vomiting accompanied by a high fever.
  • Abdominal cramping, pain, and loss of appetite.

Ongoing Medical & Risk Assessment

Doctors frequently recommend stool antigen testing to manage outbreaks and guide care, including:

  • Investigating outbreaks of diarrhoea in schools, nurseries, or care homes.
  • Ensuring safe clearance before returning to work or school.
  • Monitoring patients at high risk of rapid, severe dehydration.

Understanding Your Digestive Health

A comprehensive viral antigen test provides essential clarity on gastrointestinal illnesses. For further information on managing stomach bugs and avoiding dehydration in the UK, you can view the official NHS guide on diarrhoea and vomiting.

Pathology Reports

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your results will clearly indicate whether Rotavirus or Adenovirus antigens were “Detected” or “Not Detected” in the sample. A detected result confirms an active viral infection. If the result is not detected but severe symptoms persist, your doctor may recommend further stool testing to check for bacterial causes like Salmonella or Campylobacter.

Results Timeline: Your rapid gastrointestinal report is typically available within 1 day of submitting your properly collected sample.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this test require a blood sample?
No, this test specifically looks for the virus directly in the digestive tract, so it requires a stool (faeces) sample. There is no blood draw involved.
How do I collect the sample?
You will be provided with a sterile specimen container. You simply need to collect a small sample of faeces and ensure it is sealed securely before returning it to the clinic. It is best to collect the sample when symptoms are actively occurring.
How quickly will I get my results?
Because viral gastroenteritis requires swift management, your sample is processed rapidly by our laboratory, with results securely delivered within 1 day.
Can antibiotics cure this?
No. Rotavirus and Adenovirus are viruses, meaning antibiotics will not work against them. Treatment focuses on resting and replacing lost fluids with oral rehydration solutions.
Why test for both viruses at the same time?
Both viruses cause nearly identical symptoms of watery diarrhoea and vomiting. Testing for both simultaneously provides a faster, more comprehensive answer to what is causing the illness.

Most Searched Online Questions About Gastroenteritis

How long is Rotavirus contagious?
Rotavirus is highly contagious. It can be found in a person’s stool for a few days before symptoms start and for up to 10 days after symptoms have resolved. Strict hand washing is essential.
Is there a vaccine for Rotavirus?
Yes. In the UK, the rotavirus vaccine is routinely offered to babies at 8 and 12 weeks of age to protect against severe gastroenteritis.
Can Adenovirus cause other illnesses?
Yes. While certain strains of adenovirus primarily cause stomach bugs (enteric adenovirus), other strains can cause respiratory illnesses, sore throats, or conjunctivitis (pink eye).
