I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is a Progesterone Blood Test?

Progesterone is a vital steroid hormone produced primarily by the ovaries after ovulation. It plays a central role in regulating your menstrual cycle and preparing the lining of your uterus for a potential pregnancy. Measuring your progesterone levels provides a clear, quantitative snapshot of your reproductive health, confirming if ovulation has occurred and assessing your body’s readiness to support early pregnancy.

Ovulation Tracking

Evaluating progesterone is essential for:

  • Confirming successful ovulation
  • Assessing luteal phase sufficiency
  • Investigating causes of infertility
  • Understanding irregular menstrual cycles

Early Pregnancy Support

This test is highly useful because it:

  • Monitors early pregnancy viability
  • Checks for ectopic pregnancy risks
  • Evaluates risks of miscarriage
  • Guides necessary hormone supplements

Fertility Treatments

The laboratory provides critical data to:

  • Monitor IVF and assisted reproduction
  • Evaluate cases of amenorrhea
  • Assess ovarian function
  • Support complex endocrinology care

Clinical Uses

Why is Progesterone Testing Important?

Because progesterone levels fluctuate dramatically throughout your menstrual cycle, finding the precise level at the right time is crucial. A low level after ovulation might explain why you are struggling to conceive, while a healthy, rising level in early pregnancy provides reassurance that the pregnancy is progressing normally.

Evaluating Physical Symptoms

You should consider this test if you are actively experiencing reproductive health issues, such as:

  • Amenorrhea, which is the abnormal absence of menstrual periods.
  • Difficulty conceiving or a history of recurrent early miscarriages.
  • Unusual spotting or cramping during the early stages of a confirmed pregnancy.

Ongoing Medical Monitoring

Doctors frequently recommend progesterone testing to manage ongoing treatments and investigations, including:

  • Monitoring patients undergoing assisted reproductive treatments like IVF.
  • Checking luteal phase sufficiency roughly 7 days before your next expected period.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of prescribed progesterone supplements or hormone replacement therapies.

Understanding Your Fertility Health

A comprehensive progesterone blood test provides essential clarity on your reproductive system. For further information on fertility investigations and ovulation tracking in the UK, you can view the official NHS guide on infertility.

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your results will detail the exact level of progesterone in your blood. Because normal levels depend heavily on where you are in your menstrual cycle or pregnancy, your report will include reference ranges for the follicular phase, luteal phase, and trimesters of pregnancy. A high level generally confirms successful ovulation, while a low level during the luteal phase may indicate an issue with egg release or ovary function.

Results Timeline: Your comprehensive hormone report is typically available within just same day of your blood draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to fast before the test?
No special preparation or fasting is required before checking your progesterone levels. However, timing is very important depending on why you are taking the test.
When should I take the test to check ovulation?
If you have a standard 28 day cycle, the test is typically taken on day 21 (about 7 days before your next expected period). If your cycle is longer or shorter, your doctor will advise you on the best day to test.
How quickly will I get my results?
Your sample is processed efficiently by our UKAS accredited laboratory, and your comprehensive results will be securely delivered within same day.
Is the phlebotomy fee included in the £34.00 price?
No, the £24.00 phlebotomy service fee is separate and covers the professional process of drawing your blood at our clinic, ensuring clear pricing and no hidden costs.
What should I do if my levels are low during pregnancy?
If your result indicates lower than expected levels during early pregnancy, we highly recommend booking a GP consultation immediately. Your doctor may prescribe progesterone supplements to help support the pregnancy.
Online Trends

Most Searched Online Questions About Progesterone

What does a day 21 progesterone test show?
A day 21 test checks if ovulation has successfully occurred. A high level indicates that an egg was released, while a low level suggests an anovulatory cycle (no egg was released).
What is luteal phase sufficiency?
The luteal phase is the second half of your menstrual cycle. Luteal phase sufficiency means your body is producing enough progesterone to thicken the uterine lining adequately, making it ready for a fertilized egg to implant.
Can men have a progesterone test?
Yes. Although it is primarily known as a female reproductive hormone, men also produce small amounts of progesterone. It is sometimes tested in men to investigate suspected adrenal gland disorders.
