I just left the Victoria branch and had to leave a review! I met Kasia and Hari, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I’m extremely scared of blood and needles—they usually make me feel sick or pass out . Hari was so gentle and reassuring while taking my blood sample, and Kasia did an amazing job keeping me distracted and helping me stay calm throughout the whole process. It’s so refreshing to meet staff who are not only professional but also genuinely kind, caring, and committed to providing excellent customer service. They made what is usually a very stressful experience so much easier for me. Thank you both for your kindness and compassion. Because of the way I was treated today, I’ll definitely be recommending the Victoria branch to anyone I know who needs blood tests done!!!!!

Diagnostic Focus

What is Vitamin D 25-OH blood test?

Vitamin D 25-OH (short for 25-hydroxyvitamin D) is the main form of vitamin D circulating in your bloodstream. When your body absorbs vitamin D from sunlight on your skin, or when you take it in through your diet and supplements, your liver naturally converts it into this specific form.

Because it stays in your blood for a longer period compared to other forms, measuring your Vitamin D 25-OH levels is considered the most accurate and reliable way to check your overall vitamin D status. Simply put, this test gives you and your doctor a complete and clear picture of whether your body has enough of this vital nutrient to keep you healthy.

Bone & Teeth Protection

Vitamin D is absolutely essential for keeping your bones and teeth healthy. A deficiency can lead to:

  • Bone pain and tenderness
  • An increased risk of fractures
  • Rickets in developing children
  • Osteomalacia in adults

Muscle Function & Energy

Beyond bones, maintaining optimal Vitamin D levels is crucial for:

  • Supporting overall muscle health
  • Preventing unexplained muscle weakness
  • Maintaining healthy energy levels
  • Reducing the risk of falls in older adults

Calcium & Mineral Balance

The 25-OH test checks how well your body is:

  • Absorbing calcium from your diet
  • Maintaining the right balance of minerals
  • Processing sunlight into essential vitamins
  • Benefiting from dietary supplements

Risk Factors

Are You at Risk of Vitamin D Deficiency?

While routine screening for everyone is not recommended, this test is highly advised if you have bone pain, muscle weakness, or fall into any of the increased risk groups below.

Lifestyle & Environmental Risks

Environmental factors can drastically reduce how much vitamin D your body can naturally produce.

  • Limited sun exposure: Such as working indoors, being housebound, or wearing concealing clothing.
  • Darker skin tone: Including those of African, African Caribbean, or South Asian origin, as more melanin blocks natural synthesis.

Medical & Life Stage Risks

Specific life stages and underlying health conditions can deplete vitamin D stores or prevent proper absorption.

  • Age & Maternity: You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or are an older adult, particularly over the age of 65.
  • Digestive conditions: You have a condition that affects nutrient absorption, such as coeliac disease or inflammatory bowel disease.

Understanding Your Results

Checking your serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is a simple way to know exactly what your body needs. For more details on how this vital nutrient protects your health, please view the official NHS guide on Vitamin D.

Pathology Reports

How To Read Your Laboratory Results

Your results will detail your serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level alongside standard reference ranges indicating deficiency, insufficiency, or optimal levels. A low result does not automatically mean severe disease, but it should be interpreted alongside your physical symptoms to guide correct supplementation.

Results Timeline: Your Vitamin D report is typically available within just same day of your blood draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to fast before the test?
No, there are no special instructions and fasting is not required before checking your Vitamin D levels. It is hassle free.
How quickly will I get my results?
Your 25-OH Vitamin D results will be processed by our UKAS accredited laboratory and securely delivered within same day.
Why does skin tone affect Vitamin D?
Melanin acts as a natural sunblock. People with darker skin tones have more melanin, which means they need more time in the sun to produce the same amount of Vitamin D as someone with lighter skin.
Is the phlebotomy fee included in the £51.00 price?
No, the £24 phlebotomy service fee is separate and covers the professional process of drawing your blood at our clinic, with clear pricing and no hidden costs.
What should I do if my Vitamin D is low?
If your result indicates a deficiency, we recommend booking a GP consultation to interpret the data alongside your symptoms and receive a proper prescription or supplement plan.
Online Trends

Most Searched Online Questions About Vitamin D

What is the difference between Vitamin D and 25-OH Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is the nutrient you get from the sun or food. Your liver converts it into 25-hydroxyvitamin D, also known as 25(OH)D. Measuring 25(OH)D is the most accurate way to measure how much Vitamin D is actually stored and circulating in your body.
Can a lack of Vitamin D cause muscle pain?
Yes. A severe deficiency can cause muscle weakness, a heavy feeling in your legs, and general muscle and bone aches, particularly in older adults.
Should everyone get tested for Vitamin D?
Routine population screening is not recommended. You should get tested if you have symptoms like bone pain, muscle weakness, or if you belong to a high risk group such as being housebound or having a digestive condition.
